VR-based robot painting by demonstration featured on the EU Innovation Radar

CIGIP’s solution for robot furniture painting by demonstration in virtual reality has been published on the European Commission’s Innovation Radar. Designed for safer and repeatable furniture finishing, it is classified by the Innovation Radar as market ready.

The system was developed by the ai2 Institute, the Instituto Tecnológico de Informática (ITI) and CIGIP, at the Universitat Politècnica de València, within the European AI-PRISM project. The robot paints by imitating human movement. The operator guides it with wireless controllers in virtual or mixed reality, or in the real workspace, with no programming skills needed, and the movements are stored for reuse. The technology has been tested at the furniture manufacturer Andreu World.

Its benefits include:

  • helping furniture manufacturers preserve the know-how of their painting specialists;
  • easy and intuitive programming;
  • less dependence on highly specialised skills;
  • fewer paint defects and shorter process times.

CIGIP thanks its researchers Daniel González El Yachouti, Laura Moya Ruiz and Francisco Fraile. More information is available in the ai2 Institute news article (in Spanish).
